Forrest J. Ackerman has passed away

Written by synaptyx

Gnomus from alt.fan.blade-runner recently shared this bit of very sad news with us:

The man who coined the phrase "sci-fi," who created Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine and the character Vampira, who collected decades worth of SF and movie memorabilia and welcomed tens of thousands of SF, fantasy and horror movie fans to his home in the Hollywood HIlls to share it, and had an immeasurable impact on their lives, passed away yesterday. "Uncle Forry" had just turned 92.

I had the pleasure of meeting Forry on a number of occasions, including touring his house twice, and he was always a gracious, giving person. He was like the eccentric uncle I never had, but always wanted. There will not be another like him.

Luke Hooft also noted that Uncle Forry's grandfather had built the Bradbury Building of Blade Runner (and many other small and silver screen outings) fame.

Gnomus relplied:

And he was also friends with Ray Bradbury. A lot of people think that the Bradbury Building was named after Ray. Of course it was built before he was born.

You wait 25 years for a new Ridley Scott science fiction film then two come along at once. It's taken the guy long enough to notice that his SF movies were his best. Let's hope he brings us something as interesting and as engaging as Blade Runner and Alien. Read more...
